It's not ready for prime-time tourism quite yet, but will be a beckoning feature for those boating the Intracoastal Waterway near Oak Island in the years to come. The early 2019 signing of a long-term, rent-free lease between Oak Island's Sea Biscuit Wildlife Center and Duke Energy was cause for celebration by Duke staffers, by Sea Biscuit founder and president Mary Ellen Rogers, by town residents, by the small but dedicated group of volunteers who keep the facility running – and by the tourists who can stop in to visit when the facility opens in a year or two.

Duke is letting the avian hospital and rehab facility use a four-acre site on the mainland side of town adjacent to the outfall canal that Duke built in conjunction with its nuclear power plant, a wooded tract near Dutchman's Creek and Bill Smith Park.

Rogers and her supporters hope to raise in excess of $300,000 to build a 3,000-square-foot clinic on the site, and outfit some of the surrounding woods with outdoor pens for birds recovering from injuries – fishhooks and tangled line predominately with sea birds, car collisions with many inland species.

Visiting the new bird rehab is just one of a host of things to do on and in the water in Southeast North Carolina. Area beaches, lakes and rivers offer an abundance of ways to get your feet wet and enjoy the great outdoors.

Many people are involved in that effort. Here are a few options, certainly not a complete list:
